The most important equation I ever learned wasn’t taught in school, college, or university (to be honest, I only spent 6 days there). But it made all the difference in my business and life.
Event + Reaction = Outcome
Here’s the part that changes everything.
You cannot control the Event.
❌ Not the market crash
❌ Not the employee who quits
❌ Not the deal that falls through
❌ Not the diagnosis
You have 100% control over exactly one variable: Your Reaction.
And your Reaction is what determines the outcome.
Same event. Different reaction. Completely different life.
I learned this the hard way.
By 2009 I was reacting to everything. Every email was a crisis. Every setback was a catastrophe. I was a thermometer, reflecting the temperature of the room instead of setting it.
The shift from Reactor to Stoic doesn’t happen overnight.
But it starts with one habit.
Before you respond, pause.
Box breathe. Four seconds in. Four hold. Four out. Four hold.
Then respond.
You’ll find the reaction you choose after the breath is very different from the one you would have chosen before it.
You can’t control what happens.
You can control who you are when it does.
