War 1: The War of Survival
Food. Shelter. Income. Security.
When Manon and I moved to Spain in 2005 with €1,000/month, sleeping on a fold-out couch behind a filing cabinet — that was War 1.
Raw. Exhausting. Unforgiving.
Win this and you’ve done what 99% of humans throughout history never managed.
Most people reading this have already won it.
Which makes what comes next even more dangerous.
War 2: The War of More
This is the war that disguises itself as progress.
Enough becomes not enough.
Success becomes the new survival.
By 2009, I was deep in this war.
Business booming. Money flowing. Villa. Cars.
Then I stood in front of the mirror.
15 kilos overweight.
Drinking every night to numb the stress.
Physically present.
Mentally always at the office.
Missing Leyla’s early years without even fully realising it.
The business won War 2.
The man was losing everything else.
War 2 has no end condition.
No white flag. No victory parade.
Just another target.
Another number. Another quarter.
War 3: The War of Meaning
This is the war most high-performers never show up for.
Not because they lack courage.
Because winning it requires abandoning the scoreboard from Wars 1 and 2.
In 2009, one decision changed everything:
“Our business will serve our lifestyle. Not the other way around.”
That pivot didn’t end ambition.
It redirected it.
– 13+ years travelling the world full-time with the family
– Kilimanjaro summit at 5,895 metres with Leyla at 17
– Fitter at 52 than I was at 25
Not because I stopped building.
Because I finally understood what I was building for.
Most men get their wake-up call too late.
The mission isn’t over when the money is made.
That’s when it actually starts.
