Four weeks ago, in Bali, a guy I know well called me a “loser.” Instant dilemma: Punch him in the mouth or not? 😆 There was one problem, however:

The guy who said this was ME.
It was me talking to myself in my head.

This is what happened.
I was confronted with an investment decision I made a couple of years ago, one where I lost a lot of money.
Immediately, I went into a negative thought spiral.

It’s funny how we accept the way we talk to ourselves.
We are often our harshest critics.

We choose to remember our big failures (lessons) over and over and over.
And celebrate our big wins for a night only. If even.

It’s called ‘negativity bias’ and it served us well back in the day, when failure meant being eaten by a predator.

But ‘Failure’ is just a course correction.
At times it’s easy to forget that.
And punish yourself with negative self-talk.

How did I escape this negativity hole?

I made a list of everything I am grateful for. The list is longggggg.
Snaps me right back. Works every time.

Because here’s what Special Forces taught me:
The voice in your head can be your greatest ally or your worst enemy.
The choice is yours.
Every day.

What story are you telling yourself today?

Do you need to punch yourself in the mouth? 😉
