We failed our daughter. Two days ago, our 17-year-old daughter hit us with something we never expected—
She laid it out, brutally and without mercy.
She’s not very happy, and apparently, we’re the main reason.
We were stunned. We’ve always done our best to support her, give her everything we could. But this time, we truly messed up.
Here’s the issue:
She doesn’t have a compelling backstory.
All she sees on social media and YouTube are these epic transformation stories:
– “From rags to deca-millionaire”
– “From workaholic to digital nomad”
– “From obese to bikini model”
– “Escaping an abusive relationship and finding true love”
– “Overcoming prejudice to succeed”
And then there’s our daughter:
– Caucasian, blonde hair, charming personality, funny (as you will see)
– Wealthy family
– Loving, present and supportive parents
– Lives in one of the safest countries in the world
– Has friends scattered across continents and visits them
– Never went to traditional school; instead, traveled the world having adventures
– Likes sports, reads books, and is always motivated
Her problem is painfully clear to her—how could anyone take her seriously without real drama?
So, she came up with a plan to “fix” her backstory and create the struggles she feels she’s missing.
What’s her solution? She plans to:
– Get married in a hurry
– Work a 9-to-5 job she hates
– Buy a house with a mortgage and a car with payments
– Pile on unhealthy food
– Stack up a mountain of credit card debt
All just so she can “escape” from it all in a few years and return to the way she lives now 😉
Now, I can only hope she’ll forgive us for this.
We’ve messed up—big time.
And I am happy and grateful for it. 😉
One day she will go on her own ´Hero´s Journey´ and add to her backstory.
I am sure of it.
