There was a final time (after many times) I watched Shrek with my little daughter. I didn’t know it then. Curled up on the couch together.
No announcement.
No farewell ceremony.
Just another movie night that turned out to be the last one.
Life is a series of closing windows:
• Time with your kids being kids
• Moments with aging parents
• Physical prime for epic adventures
• Health windows for big challenges
Last week in Iceland, I sat with travelers in their 60s and 70s.
When we discussed this concept of closing windows, tears welled up in their eyes.
They knew.
They had lived it.
They’d watched windows silently close:
• Last time carrying their child to bed
• Final family vacation with everyone present
• Last conversation with a parent
• Final opportunity for certain adventures
What hit hardest?
Health became their ultimate window.
Their own.
Their loved ones’.
The final limiting factor that can’t be negotiated with.
These Golden Oldies shared a truth:
We don’t feel the urgency until the window is nearly closed.
We assume there’s always tomorrow.
Until there isn’t.
But here’s the opportunity:
We can borrow their wisdom.
Their sense of urgency.
Their crystal-clear hindsight.
Because right now:
• Your kids are still kids
• Your parents are still here
• Your body is still capable
• Your dreams are still possible
• Your windows are still open
The question isn’t “Will these windows close?”
They will.
The question is:
“What will you do while they’re open?”
Don’t wait for the announcement.
There won’t be one.
Live like you know the windows are closing.
Because they are.
