Just returned from Bali, and I’m struck by something profound.
Beyond the warm weather…
Beyond the stunning landscapes…
Beyond the incredible value for money…
It’s the people that make Bali extraordinary.
The Balinese friendliness isn’t just surface-level hospitality.
It runs deeper:
• Construction workers pause their work to smile
• Women sweeping their yards look up to say hello
• Strangers on streets make eye contact and friendly nod
Even in chaotic traffic – where scooters and cars move around in disorder – you see it:
No road rage
No honking
No angry gestures
Just calm acceptance and flow
But why? I’ve learned these last weeks, it’s woven into their culture:
1. The Banjar System:
– Each village functions as an extended family
– Community over individual
– Shared responsibilities and celebrations
– Regular gatherings that strengthen relationships
2. Their Philosophy:
– “Tri Hita Karana” – harmony between humans, nature, and spirit
– Belief that kindness returns as kindness (worked for me!)
– Deep-rooted respect for all beings
3. Their Way of Life:
– Less rushed, more present
– Generations of welcoming visitors
– Peace as a cultural priority
Imagine if we adopted just a fraction of this approach:
• Making eye contact instead of looking at our phones
• Smiling at strangers
• Choosing calm over anger
• Putting community before self
The Balinese show us it’s possible.
In our rushed Western world, maybe we need this reminder:
The simplest path to a better world?
Look up.
Smile.
Say ´Hello´.
Let´s be more Balinese today 🤩
