Last week I deadlifted 135 kilos. 5 sets, 5 reps.
Nothing special, I know. Not my best work (yet).
But why do I do this at 51 years?

It´s kind of silly, really.

I´m coaching this strong guy. One of his goals is to be part of the 500 Club.
Never heard of it? Neither had I.
1 Repetition Maximum of Deadlift, Squat, Benchpress: 500 kilos in total.
He´s almost there. I´m not by a long shot, which is OK.

But he did motivate me to pick up lifting heavy again. Super.

Normally, I do bodyweight exercises.
I follow the workout routine of Convict Conditioning (it´s a book).
It´s a bit kinder to my joints. And still I get stronger.

So why heavy lifting?

As you get older, your body declines. Heavy lifting helps you combat that:

• Prevents muscle loss (sarcopenia) – men naturally lose 3-5% muscle mass per decade after 30, but regular strength training dramatically slows this decline

• Maintains bone density – heavy lifting stimulates bone formation, reducing risk of osteoporosis and fractures, which becomes crucial after 50

• Boosts metabolism and hormone levels – resistance training increases testosterone production and resting metabolic rate, helping manage weight and energy levels

• Improves functional strength – maintains your ability to perform daily activities independently (lifting groceries, climbing stairs, getting up from chairs) as you age

• Enhances balance and coordination – stronger muscles and improved neuromuscular connection reduce fall risk, a major concern for aging adults

AND

As you get older, your health becomes the first limiting factor in making memories.

You have time, you have money…..Let´s stay fit and strong as well.

´Nough reasons, right?

See you in the gym!

PS: Are you still lifting?

PPS: In case you were wondering, I weigh 81 kilos.
