This always amazes me: People holding back on their dreams for this stupid reason.
Not because they lack skills.
Not because they lack resources.
Not because they lack opportunities.
But because they’re worried about what others might think.
The “What will the neighbors think?” – Factor.
That’s it. That’s the dream killer right there.
“I studied for this degree, my parents expect me to use it” (I have heard 40-plus-year-old men say this)
“The neighbors keep asking ‘Are you home AGAIN?’ with that judgmental tone”
“People will think I’m lazy, taking the easy way out”
You’d be shocked how often I hear this from high achievers I coach.
These successful professionals, desperately want more balance in their lives:
• More time freedom
• More precious moments with family and friends
• Better health
• A life filled with epic adventures and meaningful memories
You know: The stuff that ultimately really matters.
But that voice keeps creeping in: “What will THEY think?”
Look, I get it.
Our caveman brains are wired for tribal acceptance.
Being outcasted meant death back then.
But it’s 2025, not 25,000 BC.
Here’s your wake-up call, friend:
People don’t think about you nearly as much as you think.
They’re too busy wrestling with their own demons.
AND
Their opinions don’t matter because they don’t have to look in your mirror every morning.
They don’t have to live with your painful regrets.
They don’t have to explain to your 80-year-old self why you played it safe.
I keep telling my 17-year-old daughter,
“Don’t care what people think of you. It´s none of your business.”
Sure, respect others. Don’t rebel just for rebellion’s sake.
But most of us err too far on the side of limitation, letting others’ opinions trample on our dreams.
This isn’t a dress rehearsal.
This is your main event.
Your time in the spotlight.
And the clock is ticking.
Choose YOUR epic life.
Make it something YOU’RE proud of.
Because at the end of the day, you’re the one who has to live with your choices. Not ´the neighbour´.
