I hate rules…and that’s exactly why the Commandos wanted me.
People laugh when I tell them I served.
“You? The guy who questions everything? The guy who abhors rules?”
Here’s what they don’t understand:
Elite units don’t need robots.
They need thinkers. Problem solvers.
In Special Operations, we had one core principle:
It´s called “Commander’s Intent”
Translation:
• Here’s the objective
• Here’s why it matters
• Now go figure it out
The rest?
Pure problem-solving freedom. I loved it.
This mindset transferred perfectly into:
• Building companies
• Leading teams
• Coaching high-performers
Because success isn’t about following strict rules.
It’s about questioning assumptions:
“What if this isn’t true?”
“Who says this is impossible? How can it be done?”
“What if we did the opposite?”
Always focus on intent:
What’s the real objective?
Why does it matter?
This is what I learned about rules:
• They’re often outdated solutions based on wrong assumptions
• They reward compliance over results to protect mediocrity
In Special operations, business, and life:
The same principle applies.
Question assumptions, break rules if needed.
Breaking rules isn’t about rebellion for rebellion’s sake.
It’s about effectiveness in problem-solving.
It´s how you grow.
Because the next breakthrough in any area of your life isn’t in following the path you already know.
It’s in questioning why the path exists and daring to think and act outside the box.
As Trinity said to Neo:
“You’ve been down there, Neo. You know that road.
And you know exactly where it ends.
And I know that’s not where you wanna be.”
