A transformation happens when I put on my Green Beret. I become someone unsuitable for civilian life. ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Maybe you know what I mean.

That moment when something shifts inside you:
โ€ข For me, itโ€™s putting on my Green Beret
Or it was sliding into my ghillie suit
Or that final weapons check before leaving the compound

In an instant, I became:
Laser-focused
Ruthlessly determined
Driven by mission

But also:
Capable of controlled but extreme violence
Stripped of unnecessary empathy
Absolutely uncompromising

Itโ€™s not good or bad. It just is.
Itยดs what was needed to get the job done.

This warrior persona?
Itโ€™s been drilled into me through years of Commando training and deployments.
Years of living and breathing warrior culture. Itโ€™s as natural as breathing.

And it served me well. Parts of it still do.

You probably have these personas as well.

But hereโ€™s the thing about personas – theyโ€™re like specialized tools.

Perfect for some jobs, dangerous for others.
– That warrior mentality that keeps you alive in combat? It can destroy a family dinner.
– That mission-first mindset that wins battles? It can wreck relationships.

I see it all the time with people I coach:
The CEO treating their kids like employees
โ€ข The entrepreneur who canโ€™t turn off โ€œbusiness modeโ€
The high-achiever sacrificing their health at the altar of financial success

Weโ€™re all wearing masks. And thatโ€™s okay.

Youโ€™re different with:
Your parents vs. your friends
Your spouse vs. your children
Your team vs. your clients

The problem isnโ€™t the masks.
Itโ€™s not knowing youโ€™re wearing them and being unable to switch them when the moment calls for it.

Hereโ€™s a simple framework I use:

What matters most at the moment? Parent? Partner? Leader?
What traits embody excellence in each role?
Who represents this ideal? (Real or imagined)
A physical action that signals the shift

Pro tip: Use a token. Like carrying a small stone in your pocket.
When you touch it, youยดll remember which version of you needs to show up.

For example, when you switch from a hard-charging CEO to a loving, patient, present parent.

Because hereโ€™s the truth:

Weโ€™re not one person. Weโ€™re many. And thatโ€™s our superpower.

The key isnโ€™t to find your โ€œtrue self.โ€

Itโ€™s to master all your selves.

What mask are you wearing right now?
And is it the right one for this moment?
