Health and family matter more than even more cash

Health and family matter more than even more cash. We all know that. So why do so many smart entrepreneurs stay stuck?

It is because of The Golden Handcuffs.
In the corporate world, this term refers to financial incentives (stock options, bonuses) designed to keep an employee from leaving.
But in the entrepreneurial world, the handcuffs are psychological, and we put them on ourselves.

They come in three forms:
1. Lifestyle Creep (The “I Deserve It” Trap)
When I started making real money, my lifestyle inflated instantly.
I told myself I was “enjoying my success.” In reality, I was raising my Burn Rate.
The more you spend, the more you have to earn just to stay still.
You lose your optionality. You cannot take a sabbatical, pivot your business, or slow down.

The less you need to survive, the freer you are to live.
Freedom is the ultimate Goal.

2. The Identity Trap
This is harder to break than the financial one.
We fuse our identity with our output. ”I am a CEO.” ”I am a Founder.” ”I am the guy who makes things happen.”
We worry about irrelevance.

When I first stopped working 12 hours a day, I felt an anxiety. I felt useless.
I had to learn that my value as a human being was not tied to my email response time. 😉

3. The Fear of “Enough”
We live in a capitalist culture that views “Enough” as a failure.
Growth must be perpetual. If your company grew 20% last year, it must grow 25% this year.
It takes immense courage to look at a pile of money and say,
“I don’t need more of that; I need more time.”
It requires rejecting the scorecard of society.

Breaking the Golden Handcuffs requires a deliberate decision away from these three traps.

Here is the secret sauce:
You must build these freedoms in the right order. Most people try to build Financial Freedom first, hoping the others will follow.
– “I’ll make the money, then I’ll get healthy.”
– “I’ll make the money, then I’ll have time for my family.”
This is a trap.
By the time you make the money, your health is gone and your family has left.

You must build Time and Health first.

If you have Time and Health, you have the energy and clarity to build Wealth.
If you have Time and Health, you have the capacity to build Relationships.

When I pivoted in 2009, I didn’t have unlimited money.
But I took control of my Time.
I reclaimed my Health.
And because I was energized and focused, the money followed. It always does.

P.S. About the pic: Summit night at Kilimanjaro with my daughter Leyla in 2025.
Beats any regular office day or larger bank account. ❤️
